"smile for me" |
| |
| |
SEPTEMBER 29, 2008 - You won't hear me say that very often (in fact, the way to get those truly dramatic portraits is to tell children NOT to smile), but "Y" was willing to smile (and not smile), jump, run, and play for me. We hung out in Royal Oak Saturday morning and had a great session. I'm really proud of this work and felt so energized by this little beauty. She truly is the reason "Y" I do this work! Thanks :) |

"mr. marshmallow man" |
| |
| |
SEPTEMBER 26, 2008 - When you arrive home from a child photography shoot with marshmallows melted in your jean pocket, you know it was a successful session because you didn't have to give away ALL of your squishy, sugary gold to get the smiles. Mr. Marshmallow Man (aka "D") was such a cutie (look at those golden locks) and such a trooper. We had a lot of fun! And parents, don't hesitate to pull out the BIG GUNS to influence (ahem . . . bribe) your children into playing along -- it's all for a good cause. "D's" parents were awesome in not only having just the thing to get "D" to cooperate, but planted the goods in my camera bag so as to let me be the hero. Good thinking guys! Thanks again "L" family! See you soon ;) |

"loved the 'l' family" |
| |
| |
SEPTEMBER 23, 2008 - "L" is perhaps the happiest, smileiest (is that a word?) little ones I've ever photographed and the whole family was so much fun. Mom wondered what I would say about them here on the blog -- the only possible thing I can say to the "L" family is THANK YOU for being awesome, having a house and wardrobe straight out of Pottery Barn, gorgeous kids, a great spirit, and for such a great shoot. We got LOTS of gems. Here are just a few of this little "L." Watch out for a sneak peek of big brother "D" in a few days. |

SEPTEMBER 20, 2008 - And by that I mean that what you see is not always what's going on outside of the focus of the lens. Life is NOT a Kodak moment. While cute little "K" was eager and interested, our shoot this morning in downtown Farmington was . . . well, as most children's photography goes . . . crazy and a little chaotic! It's always fun and I've learned to just de-stress and let it go. The one thing I tell parents to do is to just let little ones get away with a bit more than usual and to just set the mood by relaxing themselves. When I suggest having a half glass of wine before a shoot, I'm not kidding. Thankfully, mom and dad were super relaxed and a go-with-the-flow kind of parents, so all worked well. Thanks for the fun "K" family. I'll be in touch very soon :) |

SEPTEMBER 17, 2008 - "L" is one of the sweetest young women I know and I've known her for a long time (all her life, in fact -- gee, that makes me sound kinda old, doesn't it? -- I just realized I was about her age when I met her mom -- bet that makes mom feel kinda old too, huh?). "L" is smart, thoughtful, and beautiful -- she's a woman of this world for sure! And just look at those gorgeous greens. I've been excited to post these from our recent shoot but wanted mom to get the first look. Thanks, ladies! |

SEPTEMBER 12, 2008 - Little "G" has the bluest eyes of blue and wears pink so perfectly -- what a colorful combination she is. I can't get over how beautiful her eyes look in that close up and what good looks she gave just playing around in a doorway. Another precious Matilda Jane model. And that velvet hat . . . too cute! Thanks for everything "G" and mom, "K." |

SEPTEMBER 7, 2008 - School's back in session and what a great time of year it is. Crisp fall days, football games, cider mills, and autumn looming just weeks away. Today, I worked with some of the cutest (and hardest working!) little models in no more appropriate a setting than on the campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (my alma mater -- GO BLUE!). There's so much life and color and energy downtown and I couldn't pass up the chance to feel like a student again. Look how adorable "J" is. Stay tuned. I have plenty more images bursting off my computer screen waiting to be seen by the world. Until next time :) |

SEPTEMBER 6, 2008 - You have no idea what a thrill and honor it was to work with this family a few weeks ago. I'll be heading to Washington, D.C. as part of the Urban Kids children's photography tour in October, but because this family wouldn't be able to make it, they came all the way to me. Unbelievable considering they have every talented Washington, D.C. children's photographer to choose from. I can't get over how BLUE little "H's" eyes are -- she takes after mom and dad. This family is so gorgeous (and so tall!) -- definitely among the warmest, most genuine, and accomplished people I've ever gotten to know. Dad is an attorney (graduated top of his class at an ivy law) and also has a pilot's licence, so they fly themselves everywhere -- how cool is that?! (He also builds small boats and remodels homes in his spare time -- no joke.) Mom has her masters, stays home with "H", runs a business on the side, and somehow found time to host an orphan from a developing nation as part of a religious outreach program this summer. SERIOUSLY! MY GOODNESS PEOPLE! You're making me look like a slacker. LOL! Thanks "M" family. I can't wait to see you again very soon! |

"the safety spatula" |
| |
| |
SEPTEMBER 4 , 2008 - Some kids have teddy bears, others have blankies, "R" puts a whole new spin on "comfort item" -- a spatula! Cracks me up!!! I absolutely LOVE (LOVE!) this little boy and can't get over how cute he looks with that hat on. He is the perfect example of "what to wear" (colorful, bright, contrasty outfit with a hat) -- a dream for any children's photographer. I'll be working with him again in a few months and can't wait to see what we get. |

"twirl power" & "summer's end" |

SEPTEMBER 2 , 2008 - Okay, TWO shout outs and some great new shots today. 1) First, a big thanks once again to Denise at Matilda Jane for posting one of my gorgeous kids (okay, technically she's "L's" kid) in her gorgeous clothes. She described it perfectly when she named this shot "twirl power." If you don't know about Matilda Jane or Mighty Acorns (her boys clothing line), you ought to! Check out my shot at the top of her blog. |

2) This totally touched my heart when I received this note from "D" yesterday. This is the kind of response you hope to get when you start a business. Yeah, of course the money is nice, but knowing you've really touched someone or made their day -- that's what it's really about! "D's" words really stay with me and give me the fuel to keep plugging away. Thanks for the boost, "D"! |

"I just want you to know that the first thing I did every morning this summer was check out your beautiful blog!!! I have to return to my first graders tomorrow, so I probably won't start out my day checking out your blog, but it sure brought a lot of joy all summer. You are amazing!" |

By the way, people often ask me why I don't show comments on my blog. There are a few reasons, but the main reason is that I don't have time to moderate comments. It just seems like one more task to stay on top of. With a full load and a family, it just didn't make it on "the list." I much rather prefer spending time taking pictures and working with you guys than with Dreamweaver and HTML code. I do love feedback, however, and would love to hear from some of you consistent lurkers. I'm curious about you just as you're curious about me. Drop me a line and say "hi." |

SEPTEMBER 1 , 2008 - I have a feeling this mom is chomping at the bit awaiting a sneak peek of her gorgeous little ones. I know it seems like an eternity since last Thursday, but I'm officially DONE with the Urban Kids session galleries and will launch them tomorrow, on Labor Day. I have so many awesome pictures to share with you all. Thank you all for coming out and making this such a successful photography event. There will definitely be more sessions in 2009. "J" and "N" below are two of my favorites. Mom and I have been iVillage buddies since we were pregnant with our little boys -- our little guys even share the same birthday. How cool is that? Thanks for everything, "J."
I'll be in touch with everyone tomorrow and will have LOTS of blog shots from recent sessions. Thanks for checking in!
