JUNE 2008

ride off into the sunset (magic hour)

June 24, 2008 -The natural lighting last night around 8:30 p.m. was just amazing!  If you don't know what magic hour is, it's the time just before the sun sets when everything is warm and golden and the light is radiant and even and soft.  This is the joy of living in Michigan.  We had just finished our mulberry cobler and coffee then wandered outside to look at the sunset over the hills and the horses.  The kids raced a dog cart around the track.  "M" hung out in cowgirl pink and her purse.  I couldn't have staged it any better if I had tried.

Midday full sun is enough to make any photographer shake in her pink cowgirl boots, but "M" proves it can be done.  This young'n is such a natural beauty with such "high-impact" expression.  I may have to find other ways to work with her in the future . . .

  the "h" family

June 16, 2008 - Thanks for the fun, "H" family!  We set Royal Oak on fire!  Can you believe the arms on this girl?  SOLID!  If the camera adds any weight (not to  this one) it also adds years.  This pretty one is waaaaay younger than you think!  Watch out for those boys, dad!

This little one's feet barely touched the ground the whole time we were shooting.  What energy!  I had to crank up the shutter speed to catch this little one in motion.  Whew . . . I'm tired just looking at him.

Finally, I hope you had just as much fun with your dad on Father's Day as this little guy had with his.

the bump (be careful what you wish for)

June 12, 2008 - Back in February, when Michigan was arctic and ice-covered, I asked the universe for more work.  I had a steady stream, but a bit more would have been nice.  It was not to be.  Fast forward to June 11.   As I sat poolside yesterday (okay, an inflatable infant pool, but poolside nonetheless), I basked in the sun and thought "I'd really love to take it down a notch and relax."  Well, as if on cue, the universe laughed once again.  On the same day that one of my shots was featured on the Matilda Jane blog and I had big time traffic and e-mails (thank you, Denise!), I also got a call from The Bump (a sibling site of The Knot and The Nest, The NestBaby, and Lilaguide) to do some editorial work.  What a day!  I'll be working with a new mom and three-month-old little girl of Sterling Heights, MI to produce some "mommy and me" shots for both the magazine and web site. The shoot takes place in a few weeks.  I'll keep you posted on the big reveal when that happens (I have no idea when).  So the secret, of course, is to be careful what you wish for.  You'll probably get it.  Just not on your terms (LOL)!

"f" and the fun family

June 1, 2008 - In addition to "F's" mom and I sharing the same birthday (how cool!), we've got a lot in common.  They live in the same neighborhood where my mom grew up in Redford, Michigan, and our little blue-eyed boys turned one within a few weeks of each other (you're right, mom, they do look a lot alike -- both dolls!). We did the unofficial "one year" shots this morning with this gorgeous little guy.  The minute I turned down their street and saw the beautiful tree-lined drive and then when little "F" had a smile for me at the door, I knew this was going to be fun.  Thanks, guys! :)

  matilda jane

June 1, 2008 - Okay, I know that having a little boy is no excuse, but you have to have your head under a rock to not know how cool the Matilda Jane clothing line is.  I knew my client (little "A's" mom) had great style, but it wasn't until I spoke with fellow photographer and new friend, Amy Porter of Lil Sweetpea Photography, that I "got it" about why this line has such a cult following.  This is the most adorable stuff I've ever seen and I think all my clients should check it out.  Perfect for photos and there's a boy's line too, Mighty Acorns.

Little "A" and I had a fun session in downtown Royal Oak about a week ago.  Such a cutie.  Look at those smiln' eyes :)

do you yahoo?

June 1, 2008 - If you do, type in "Childrens Photographer Detroit" and you'll find that Karen Lippowiths Photography, LLC comes up first.  Same thing on MSN LiveSearch if you type in "Detroit Children's Photographer" (after the sponsored links, that is).  The rankings change daily, but I'm now usually within the top 10 on Google, AOL, MSN, and the rest in some form or another.  This is due to my continual site optimization and your many visits to my site.   Thanks :)

  I was sighted!

June 1, 2008 - This is kind of a personal note to "Jen U" (as in U know who you are) who showed up at . . . of all places . . . my subdivision GARAGE SALE on Saturday morning.  She saw my promotional cards on a table and said "Are YOU Karen Lippowiths?"  She actually knew my work.  She said she is a blog stalker.   I was stalked once in college, but never "sighted" before.  What a huge over the moon thrill it was for a total stranger to walk up my driveway at 9:00 a.m. and recognize me and my work.  Thank you for making my YEAR, Jen.  I'll be in touch for sure :)

(And in case you're wondering:  I sold an old black leather "guy" couch for $125; a ratty green La-Z-boy for $50; a particle board Playstation table for $10; selling my husband's bachelor pad furniture cheap and ordering all new? PRICELESS).
